Success Stories
Morgan Smith, a graduating senior at Killdeer High School, received the Workforce Development Award from the Dunn County Job Development Authority (JDA). This $1,000 scholarship recognizes students who work full- or part-time during their junior and/or senior years (including summer jobs).
“We offer two scholarships annually to graduating seniors who reside in Dunn County,” says Carie Boster, Director of the JDA. “The scholarships are intended to highlight the important role our youth play in the local business community.”
Smith successfully balanced part-time work with academics, sports, and other extracurricular activities. Not only does this make her a well-rounded student, but it also prepares her for success in college and in her future career.
Smith has worked part-time as a daycare staff member at the Little Cowboys Learning Center since 2024. This daycare is provided to school staff and accommodates three different age groups. Smith has handled everything from changing diapers to helping older kids with their snacks.
Beyond caring for infants and toddlers, Smith has grown her business acumen by training new employees and learning to communicate clearly with her boss, coworkers, and the parents of the kids she is in charge of.
“Morgan demonstrates an exceptional sense of responsibility by working part-time at the Killdeer School Daycare,” writes Jeff Simmons, Killdeer Superintendent, in his recommendation. “This role not only provides her with valuable experience but also illustrates her commitment to serving others, particularly younger children in our community.”
Smith plans to attend South Dakota State University and pursue a bachelor's degree in interior design. She appreciates how this career field will allow her to balance multiple projects at once and visit different sites and clients each day.
“I want a hands-on job where I do something different every day,” she says.
This scholarship will help cover tuition or other college expenses. To receive this scholarship, Smith wrote an essay outlining her responsibilities and what she learned from the experience. She also needed to submit a letter of reference from her employer.
